Dear Mr Hipkins,

My name is Emma Gunn and I am a year 7 student from Kaiapoi North School. I am in one of the newly built classrooms, Tiwai (room 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22) and I will be writing to you about the insufficiency of air conditioning in our classroom, as the heat in Kaiapoi is scorching and blistering our skin.

We all know you do wonders with your job, like listening to schools opinions and making things happen. Just maybe, you could do a better job and make another school happy by giving us air conditioning?

Why, you might ask? Well, from this enraging heat we get dehydrated, which leads to the teachers getting grumpy and it gradually slows down our learning. However, it is always hotter inside than out, and opening doors and windows won’t help because of where our classroom is located in the school, so we only get strong wind which slams doors and windows close. It also makes us feel stuffy, nauseous, it gives us headaches but it attracts bugs, the worst of all. So whenever you walk into the classroom, a group of over-friendly sandflies greets you.

Our school values are vital, as they help us learn, but we can’t focus on learning if we are being distracted by the heat.

Because of the heat, we get frustrated and irritated, so we yell and splash each other with the water from the fountains outside, which gets us wet and gets the teachers ticked off. So that makes us all angry.

Honestly, because of all the sweat that the heat creates, it feels as if we’ve literally just been drowned in litres of hot water.

Please agree with our request, as it would have a great influence with our learning.
